The
Church of Saint
George is situaded not far from the Church of Our Saviour.
It was here that the courtyard of Prince Yuriy Dolgoruky stood in the twelfth
century. The stone Church of Saint George was built here in 1157.
After the
fire of 1778 it was demolished and the stone was used to erect the present building
(1783-1784), constructed in provincial Baroque style.
Excavation has shown
that it was precision placed on the stone walls of the old Church which are now
completely buried.
The original Church was almost square in shape, with a
single dome supported by four cruciform pillars, flat pilaster strips on the outer
walls, and three huge apses. Its socle was not structured and had a simple, flat
surface.
With its severe, spare lines and massive proportions the Church of
Saint George presented a sharp contrast with the Church of Our Saviour, which
was built not far away few year later. It was very similar to the Church of Saint
Boris and Saint Gleb in Kideksha (1152), the country residence of Yuriy Dolgoruky
just outside Suzdal.
